Roofing in Airdrie, a short drive up Highway 2

Airdrie went from 20,407 people in 2001 to 74,100 in the 2021 Census. That growth left a lot of two-storeys and townhomes in King’s Heights, Luxstone, Reunion and Bayside still wearing their first set of shingles.

Hail is the other half of the story. The June 13, 2020 storm hit northeast Calgary, Airdrie and Rocky View County hardest and led to about $1.2 billion in insured damage. We are a short drive up Highway 2 when your roof needs a look.

Roof maintenance

35-Point Roof Tune-Up

For roofs that aren’t ready for replacement: we reseal flashings and vents, replace damaged shingles and check for weak spots. Typically $1,500–$5,000 + GST, with a 2-year warranty.

Asphalt roofs for Airdrie homes

Asphalt covers almost every Airdrie roof, and many of the originals went on in the 2000s and 2010s. When one comes due, we take it off completely and put on a new system with proper ventilation and flashing. How our roof replacements work.

Malarkey Emerald Pro™ certified contractor

Emerald Pro is the highest rung of Malarkey’s contractor program. It requires our crews to install the full system, which opens up enhanced coverage on eligible roofs.

Architectural shingles

Most popular

The standard step up from first-generation shingles, with a thicker, dimensional look.

Impact-rated shingles

Built to take a harder hit before cracking, worth a look in a city hit by major hail in 2014 and 2020. Ours carry a Class 4 impact rating (UL 2218).

Built for wind

Is metal right for your Airdrie roof?

Owners who have been through a hail claim sometimes ask about steel. Metal panels have no tabs for wind to catch and they shed snow fast, though hail can still dent some profiles. Because metal costs more up front, we price it next to shingles so you can compare the two. More about metal roofing.

Airdrie siding replacement

The 2020 storm shredded siding on homes across the area, and many houses that escaped still have faded or cracked original vinyl. Replacing siding, roof and eavestroughs in one project lets us match colours across the house. We install house wrap and flash windows, doors and corners before any panels go up. Compare our siding options.

Fibre cement

Our top pick

A harder, thicker board than vinyl that won’t burn and keeps its factory-baked colour. Lap, board-and-batten and shingle profiles are available.

Vinyl

Lowest cost and quick to install, good for refreshing a townhome or starter two-storey.

Metal siding

Steel siding for garages, accent walls and modern exteriors, and it pairs well with a steel roof.

Building an Airdrie roof to last

These are the parts of a new roof that matter most when hail and wind come through.

01

Decking checked board by board

Any decking that is soft, delaminated or cracked gets replaced before a single new shingle goes down.

02

Membrane where ice backs up

Ice and water membrane runs along the eaves and valleys, where freeze-thaw cycles push water backward.

03

New vents, boots and flashing

Every skylight gets fresh flashing and every vent and pipe boot is new, because reused parts are where leaks begin.

04

Fastened for storm winds

We nail to the shingle maker’s high-wind pattern and seal the starter rows and ridge so storm gusts can’t peel the edges.

How an Airdrie job comes together

From first visit to cleanup, this is the order of the work. Most houses are finished within one or two days of the materials arriving.

We start on the roof itself, photographing any hail marks, lifted shingles or worn flashing.

  1. 01

    Inspection with photos

Our inspector checks shingles, flashings, vents and attic airflow and photographs every problem spot for you.

  2. 02

    Quote on paper

You get the materials, scope and timing in writing, and siding or eavestroughs can be priced on the same quote.

  3. 03

    Tidy work days

The bin sits where it won’t block the street, and magnetic sweeps pick up stray nails before the crew leaves.

  4. 04

    Walkthrough, then a check-up

We walk the finished roof with you and return about a year later to see how it handled the winter.

When an Airdrie roof needs attention

Hail bruising you can’t see from the ground

Airdrie took major hail in August 2014 and again on June 13, 2020, when stones the size of tennis balls fell. Cracked or bruised shingles may not show from the driveway, but they shed granules faster and leak sooner.

First roofs on 2000s and 2010s streets

With the population more than tripling since 2001, many neighbourhoods were roofed in the same short window. Curling edges and granules in the downspouts mean that window is closing.

Dented vents and torn siding

After a storm, look at metal vents, eavestroughs and the siding on the side that faced the hail. Dents there are a clue the shingles took hits too.

Leaks at a skylight or bathroom fan

Brown rings on the ceiling near a skylight or fan usually point to failed flashing or a split pipe boot.

Tabs lifting in the wind

Shingles that flap, or end up on the lawn after a windy day, have lost their seal.
