A Windermere roofer for homes, cabins and stratas

Windermere sits on the east shore of Lake Windermere, where wind comes straight off the water and through the pines. The August 2024 windstorm showed what that means: shingles torn off, trees and branches through roofs and eavestroughs ripped away, and a lot of insurance claims. Add heavy snow, ice dams and strong summer sun, and Windermere roofs work hard. Many of the homes and cabins here are 25 to 40 years old, with original cedar shakes, tired asphalt or older metal roofs, and many owners live in Calgary for most of the year.

Most of our Windermere work is storm and insurance repairs, full roof replacements in shingles or metal, cedar shake replacements, strata and townhome re-roofs, metal roof tune-ups, and eavestroughs, soffit and fascia. Every job starts with a hands-on inspection, and you get the photos and a written, line-by-line quote.

Strata and townhome roofing in Windermere

We have re-roofed a multi-building townhome strata on Lakeview Drive in Windermere, building by building, so we know how these projects run here. You get one point of contact for the property manager or strata council, a written scope and price for each building, photos of every roof before, during and after, notices for residents and a tidy site around parking and walkways. If a storm has damaged several buildings, we document each one for the insurance adjuster. More about our strata roofing.

Shingle roofing for lakeside wind and snow

Windermere roofs take wind off the lake, heavy snow, freeze-thaw and strong summer sun. Shingles that have lost their seal are the first to go in a windstorm. In the Columbia Valley, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years. An inspection tells you exactly where yours stands. When we replace a roof, we strip to the deck and install a complete system: ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys, sealed starter strips and high-wind nailing, balanced ventilation, new flashings and Class A fire-rated shingles. How our roof replacements work.

Malarkey Emerald Pro™ certified contractor

Emerald Pro is Malarkey’s highest contractor certification. Our installers follow the manufacturer’s full system, which is what makes enhanced warranty coverage possible on eligible Windermere roofs.

Architectural shingles

Most popular

A heavier, dimensional shingle with a higher wind rating than old three-tab roofs.

Impact-rated shingles

A tougher shingle that resists hail and may qualify for an insurance discount. Ask your insurer.

Designer shingles

Shake-look profiles for homes moving off cedar, without the upkeep or fire risk.

Our 10-Year Labour Warranty comes with every Windermere roof, and select shingle lines carry manufacturer warranties of up to 50 years.

Fire-resistant

Metal roofing in Windermere

A steel roof is fire-resistant, with a Class A fire rating, handles wind far better than worn shingles, sheds snow and lasts decades, which is why so many Windermere owners ask about metal when their cedar shakes or shingles are done. We install standing seam and steel panel roofs, and we tune up older ones: re-tightening and replacing screws, new washers, re-sealing seams and vents, fixing flashing and adding snow brackets over entrances and walkways. Metal costs more up front, so we price metal and shingles side by side. More about metal roofing.

Fire-resistant siding in Windermere

Many Windermere cabins still have cedar shake or wood siding. James Hardie fibre cement is non-combustible, so it will not catch fire from embers, and comes in wood-grain profiles that many strata rules require. We also install metal siding, repair siding, soffit and fascia after storm damage, and often do the siding with a new roof so the whole exterior is finished at once. Every siding job goes over fresh house wrap, with windows, doors and corners flashed first. Compare our siding options.

James Hardie fibre cement

Fire-resistant

Non-combustible and dimensionally stable, so it stands up to wind, embers and sun, and holds its factory colour for years. Comes in lap, board-and-batten and shingle looks.

Metal siding

Durable, non-combustible steel panels for garages, accent walls and modern mountain exteriors, and an easy match for a metal roof.

Vinyl

Lower cost and low maintenance, and a quick way to refresh a rental or cabin in a new colour.

Seamless

Eavestroughs, soffit and fascia in Windermere

We are a full exterior company, not only a roofer. We install seamless eavestroughs and downspouts, replace soffit and fascia, and repair troughs that sag, leak, have been broken by ice or torn off in a storm. In Windermere, the job is moving snowmelt and storm water away from the house, so we size eavestroughs for the roof and route downspouts away from foundations and walkways.

  • Seamless eavestroughs and downspouts
  • Soffit and fascia replacement, including rotted wood
  • Eavestrough repairs, re-sloping and leak fixes
  • Done with your roof or on their own

What goes into a Windermere roof replacement

A Windermere roof has to handle wind off the lake, heavy snow, ice dams and summer sun. These are the four places we spend extra time on every roof here.

Old roof stripped during a roof replacement, drone view

01

A solid deck under everything

After tear-off we check every sheet of decking and replace anything soft or rotted. Cabins coming off cedar shakes often have spaced plank decking, so we add solid sheathing before the new roof goes on.

02

Ice and water protection

Membrane along the eaves, in every valley and around chimneys and skylights keeps meltwater from backing up under the roof when ice builds up at the edge.

Chimney flashing on a lakeside Windermere cabin roof

03

Flashing around chimneys & vents

Chimneys, skylights and plumbing vents are where most leaks start. On a roof replacement we replace pipe boots and vents and re-flash chimneys and skylights instead of reusing old parts.

04

Wind-rated edges and ventilation

Sealed starter strips, high-wind nailing and properly fastened ridge caps hold the roof together in a lake windstorm. Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation keeps the deck cold under snow, so ice does not build at the eaves.

How a Windermere roof replacement works

From the first inspection to the check-up a year later, this is what a Windermere roof replacement looks like. If you are away, we send photos at every stage. Once materials arrive, most homes are finished in a few days.

Every Windermere quote starts with a hands-on inspection of the roof, chimneys and vents. Our team includes a HAAG® and IICRC® certified inspector, which matters when wind or tree damage goes through insurance.

  1. 01

    Roof inspection

We check the roof covering, flashings, chimneys, vents and roof ventilation, and send you photos of anything that needs attention, even if you are not in town.

  2. 02

    A written quote

Materials, scope and timeline laid out line by line. For strata and commercial properties, each building can be priced separately.

  3. 03

    Installation, done carefully

Bins placed so driveways and parking stay clear, magnetic nail sweeps and a tidy site every day.

  4. 04

    Walkthrough & one-year visit

We walk the finished roof with you, or send you the photos, then come back the next year to check it after its first full winter.

Roof problems we see most in Windermere

Wind damage and blow-offs

Wind off the lake lifts shingles that have lost their seal. After a storm we document the damage with photos for you and your adjuster.

Trees and branches

Big pines and firs come down in storms. We secure the roof, then repair the deck, roof and eavestroughs once the claim is approved.

Cedar shakes at end of life

Many Windermere cabins still have 25- to 40-year-old shakes. We replace them with shingles or metal, adding solid sheathing where needed.

Ice dams

Poor attic ventilation melts snow that refreezes at the eaves and backs up under the shingles. Balanced ventilation and ice and water protection fix it.

Leaking skylights and flashing

Old skylight and chimney flashing is behind many of the leaks we are called about. We re-flash or replace them.

Loose screws on metal roofs

On 20- and 25-year-old metal roofs, screws back out and washers crack. A tune-up stops leaks before they start.

Asphalt & metal

Roof repair and tune-ups in Windermere

Not every roof needs replacing. If yours has wind damage, a leak, blown-off shingles, a leaking skylight or loose metal fasteners, we repair it, whether the roof is asphalt or metal, through insurance or not. When water is coming in, tell us when you call so we can get to you as quickly as possible. A spring or fall tune-up catches small problems before they reach the deck, and we send photos if you are away.

  • Shingle repairs: wind-damaged, blown-off or cracked shingles and ridge caps
  • Metal roof tune-ups: screws, washers, seams, flashing and snow brackets
  • Leak tracing around chimneys, skylights, vents and valleys
  • Tune-ups with photos and a written report

Real questions from Windermere property owners

Each of these is based on a real request from a Windermere-area property owner. We have removed names and addresses.

Storm damage

“Shingles have blown off our roof in the wind. Can you repair it?”

Yes. We secure the roof, replace the missing shingles and check the rest of the roof for lifted tabs, and document everything with photos if you are going through insurance.

Roof repair →
Cedar shakes

“Our cabin has cedar shakes and we want to go to shingles. It is a secondary property.”

We inspect the deck, then quote shingles and metal side by side, including new sheathing where needed. If you are away, you get photos at every stage.

Roof replacement →
Metal roof

“Our metal roof is 25 years old and the screws need re-tightening. Do you do tune-ups?”

Yes. We re-tighten or replace screws, renew washers, re-seal seams and vents and check flashing, and send you a photo report.

Metal roofing →
Ice dams

“We have an ice dam problem on our roof. We need recommendations for now and a long-term fix.”

We look at the attic ventilation, insulation and eaves, deal with the immediate leak, and quote the ventilation and ice and water protection that stops it coming back.
