The project
The problem. Shingles were lifting and blowing off in the wind, on a large home right on the water where the wind off the lake hits hard.
What we found. The original shingles had been nailed about an inch too high. Nails that miss the nailing strip do not hold the shingle properly, so the wind could get under them and pull them loose.
Our advice. The issue was across the whole roof, not just one spot, so patching would only have chased the problem around. We recommended a full replacement.
What we did. We stripped the roof to the decking, installed new underlayment and put on new Malarkey shingles, nailed in the right place across all 18 roof planes.
The result. A roof that is built to stay put in the wind. A neighbour a couple of doors down saw the work and called us about their own roof soon after.
