Class 4 impact-rated shingle roof replacement
Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test, where steel balls are dropped on the shingle to copy hail. Malarkey’s Legacy line uses rubberized asphalt that flexes when it is hit instead of cracking. Calgary sits in one of the most hail-prone parts of Canada, so many owners pick Class 4 when the roof is due. Some insurers also look at impact ratings, so ask yours.
With Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years, and cedar shake can last a bit longer. An inspection tells you exactly where your roof stands.
- Highest rating under UL 2218
- Rubberized asphalt that flexes
- Priced beside standard shingles
- Same colours as regular architectural lines

Designer shingle roof replacement
Designer shingles are thicker, layered asphalt shingles cut to look like slate or cedar shake. They suit character homes in Mount Royal, Elbow Park and Britannia, and newer homes that want a richer roof line. Some designer lines also carry an impact rating, and we will show you which ones. The photos here are regular architectural shingles we installed in Riverbend, so you can compare the profile.

Class 4 and designer shingle questions
Want to see samples before you decide? Call (403) 333-0319.
What does Class 4 mean on a shingle?
It is the highest rating in the UL 2218 impact test. A Class 4 shingle has taken hits from a 2-inch steel ball without cracking.
Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?
No roof is hail-proof. Class 4 shingles are built to take hits better than standard shingles, which matters in a city that sees hail most summers.
What is the difference between architectural and designer shingles?
Both are asphalt. Designer shingles are thicker and layered to look like slate or shake, while architectural shingles have a flatter, dimensional look.
Can a new shingle roof help with ice dams?
Every replacement gets ice and water membrane at the eaves and a ventilation check, which helps.
Do you also install siding?
Yes. James Hardie fibre cement, vinyl and metal siding, often on the same quote as the roof.
