Replacing an old cedar shake roof

Cedar shake looks great on a character home, but after decades of Calgary sun, hail and Chinook winds it dries out, splits and curls. Most shake roofs in older neighbourhoods also sit on spaced boards instead of a solid deck. When we replace one, we strip the shakes, add solid sheathing where it is needed, then put down new underlayment, ice and water membrane and flashing before the new roof goes on.

With Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years, and cedar shake can last a bit longer. An inspection tells you exactly where your roof stands.

  • Old shakes stripped and hauled away
  • Solid sheathing added where needed
  • New underlayment and flashing
  • Valleys and dormers rebuilt

Keep the shake look, or change it

Some owners want the same look, some want less upkeep. Euroshield rubber is moulded to look like shake and carries a Class 4 impact rating. Designer shingles give a thick, layered look for less than steel. Standing-seam steel suits modern infills. We price the options side by side so you can compare, and we can add new siding, eavestroughs, soffit and fascia to the same quote.

What to replace cedar shake with

Each of these suits an older Calgary home. Here is the short version.

Euroshield rubber

Looks like shake, made from recycled rubber, Class 4 impact rating.

Designer shingles

Thick, layered asphalt shingles that give a shake or slate look.

Steel

Lasts for decades and sheds snow. A good fit on modern infills.

Siding to match

James Hardie fibre cement, vinyl or metal siding.

Cedar shake roof questions

Not sure if your shakes have more years left? Call (403) 333-0319.

Split, curled or missing shakes, moss, and shakes that look grey and thin are common signs. An inspection shows whether the roof has a few years left or is ready to replace.

We can talk through it, but most Calgary owners now choose a shake look instead: Euroshield rubber or designer shingles. Both need far less upkeep than wood.

Many older shake roofs sit on spaced boards. Asphalt and rubber need a solid deck, so we add sheathing where it is needed and show you what we find.

Every replacement gets ice and water membrane at the eaves and a check of the ventilation, which helps cut down on them.
