Why owners switch from cedar
Cedar shake is beautiful when it is new. In Calgary’s dry air and hail it splits, cups and grows moss on the shaded side, and insurers often charge more to cover it. Keeping a cedar roof sound means regular treatment and replacing broken shakes.

From cedar to rubber, step by step
Cedar roofs are often laid over spaced boards, which rubber cannot sit on. We tear off the shakes, sheet the roof with a solid deck, then install underlayment, ice and water protection where ice dams form, flashing and vents before the Euroshield goes on.
With Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years, and cedar shake can last a bit longer. If your cedar is past that point, this is the time to change it.
