When a skylight needs replacing

Skylights from the 1990s and early 2000s often have failing seals between the panes, so they fog or drip. The flashing around them is a common leak point, and ice dams can push water under it on low-slope roofs.

If the skylight is near the end of its life, replacing it during a roof replacement means it is flashed into new underlayment instead of patched into old shingles.

Flashed into any roof type

We flash skylights into architectural, designer or Class 4 shingles, standing-seam steel, cedar shake and Euroshield rubber roofs. Each roof type has its own flashing kit, so the skylight stays tight for the life of the roof.

With Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years, and cedar shake can last a bit longer. If yours is close, plan the skylight with it.

Skylight questions

Got a leaking skylight? Call (403) 333-0319.

Yes, but the flashing has to tie into older shingles. During a roof replacement the result is cleaner.

Yes. We deck over the opening and roof over it to match.

A properly flashed skylight should not. Most skylight leaks come from old or patched flashing.

One skylight usually takes part of a day.
