Complete roof systems for Calgary homes

A roof is more than shingles. It is the deck, the underlayment, the membrane at the eaves, the vents, the flashing, and the eavestroughs, soffit and fascia that carry water away from the house. When we replace a roof in Calgary, we look at all of it and quote it together, so the whole system works as one.

For more than 25 years we have replaced roofs across the city, from character homes in Mount Royal, Elbow Park and Marda Loop to large family homes in Aspen Woods, Evanston and Sage Hill. You get a written quote that spells out the materials and scope line by line, and a 10-Year Labour Warranty on every new roof.

Asphalt shingle roof replacement in Calgary

Most Calgary homes have asphalt shingles, and a lot of neighbourhoods built in the 1990s and 2000s are now on their first replacement. With Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt shingles usually need replacing at around 15 years, and cedar shake can last a bit longer. An inspection tells you exactly where your roof stands. On a replacement we strip every layer, repair the deck, and rebuild with synthetic underlayment, membrane at the eaves and valleys, balanced ventilation, new metal flashing and shingles nailed to the high-wind pattern. See the full replacement process.

If hail is a concern, ask about Class 4 impact-rated shingles. Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. Malarkey’s Legacy line uses rubberized asphalt that flexes under a hit instead of cracking, which is why it is a popular choice in Calgary.

Malarkey Emerald Pro™ certified contractor

Malarkey’s Emerald Pro program is its top tier for contractors. We install the full Malarkey roof system, so eligible Calgary roofs can qualify for Malarkey’s extended manufacturer warranty.

Architectural shingles

Most popular

The shingle most Calgary homeowners pick when an older three-tab or first-generation roof comes off.

Class 4 impact-rated shingles

Best for hail

The top impact rating a shingle can earn. Malarkey Legacy shingles are rubberized so they hold up better when hail hits.

Designer shingles

Shake- and slate-look shingles that suit character homes and custom builds.

Every Calgary roof we install comes with the 10-Year Labour Warranty, and select shingle lines carry up to 50 years of manufacturer coverage.

Sheds snow

Metal roof replacement in Calgary

Steel is a popular upgrade on Calgary infills, modern builds and homes where the owners want a roof they will not have to think about for decades. A metal roof sheds snow, has no tabs for Chinook gusts to lift, and usually outlasts two shingle roofs. The upfront cost is higher, so we price standing-seam steel and designer shingles side by side and let you compare. More on metal roofing in Calgary.

Euroshield rubber roof installation in Calgary

Euroshield rubber roofing is made from recycled rubber and shaped to look like cedar shake or slate. It carries a Class 4 impact rating, so it sits beside Class 4 shingles and steel as the third impact-resistant choice. Many owners of older shake roofs switch from cedar shake to rubber to keep the shake look without the upkeep. We price rubber, metal and shingles side by side so you can compare. The photos here are a shake-to-rubber job we did in Cochrane.

Siding replacement in Calgary

Calgary siding deals with hail, dry winter air and intense summer sun, so older vinyl often ends up cracked, dented or faded. Plenty of homeowners redo the siding in the same year as the roof so the colours are picked together and the scaffolding goes up once. The walls are wrapped and every window, door and corner is flashed before new panels go on. We install James Hardie fibre cement, vinyl and metal siding. Compare siding types.

Fibre cement

Our top pick

Stands up to hail far better than vinyl, won’t burn, and holds its colour for years. Available in lap, board-and-batten and shingle profiles.

Vinyl

The budget-friendly choice, easy to maintain and quick to install.

Metal siding

Eavestrough, soffit and fascia replacement in Calgary

The roof edge takes a beating in Calgary: heavy snow, spring melt and summer hail all land on the eavestroughs, soffit and fascia first. We replace them together with your roof, so the drip edge, gutters and attic vents all line up and nothing is left half done. That covers seamless eavestrough replacement, new soffit and fascia, and commercial eavestroughs for condo and commercial buildings. See eavestroughs, soffit and fascia in Calgary.

Seamless eavestroughs

With your roof

Fewer joints, so fewer places to leak, with downspouts placed to move water away from the house.

Soffit

Lets the attic breathe and keeps birds and pests out.

Fascia

The board the eavestroughs hang on, wrapped in aluminum so it does not rot.

Skylight replacement in Calgary

Skylights are a common leak point on older roofs. When we replace your roof, it is the right time to replace the skylight as well, with new flashing tied into the new underlayment instead of patching around an old unit. We flash skylights into asphalt shingles, standing-seam metal and Euroshield rubber, and check the attic ventilation at the same time. See skylight replacement in Calgary.

What goes into a Calgary re-roof

Hail, Chinook wind and freeze-thaw are what wear out Calgary roofs. These four steps are where we spend the extra time.

Drone view of an inner southwest Calgary home stripped to the roof deck during a Bears Valley roof replacement

01

A sound deck under everything

Once the old roof is off, every sheet of decking gets checked. Anything soft is swapped out and the rest is re-nailed, so the new shingles sit on a solid base.

02

Membrane at eaves and valleys

Self-sealing membrane goes along every eave and valley. After a Chinook melts the snow and the cold snaps back, ice dams can form at the roof edge, and the membrane keeps that meltwater out of the house.

03

New flashing and vents

Chimneys, plumbing stacks, skylights and wall joints are where most leaks start. We install new pipe boots and vents and re-flash each of them with new metal.

04

Nailed for Chinook wind

Chinook gusts pull at any loose edge. We follow the high-wind nailing pattern, seal the starter strips at the eaves and rakes and fasten every ridge cap, which the shingle warranty also requires.

How your Calgary roof replacement works

It starts with a call or the quote form. From there it is a roof inspection, a written quote, and then the install.

Roof inspections are done by our HAAG® certified inspector, and you get the photos.

  1. 01

    Contact us

Call us or fill in the quote form and tell us a little about your home and what you have in mind.

  2. 02

    Roof inspection

We book a time to look at the roof, the flashing, the vents and the eavestroughs, and take photos along the way.

  3. 03

    Your written quote

You get a written quote with the materials, the scope and the timing, with any eavestrough, soffit, fascia or siding work listed on its own lines.

  4. 04

    Installation and a one-year check

Once the work is done we walk the finished roof with you, then come back about a year later to check it after its first Calgary winter.

Signs your Calgary roof is ready to replace

Worn, cracking original asphalt shingles on a Riverbend, Calgary roof
Age

Original shingles at the end of their life

Many Calgary homes built in the 1990s and 2000s still have their first roof. Cracked, curled and bare shingles like these, on a Riverbend home, are the most common thing we see on a replacement.

Lifted, broken shingle tab found during a roof inspection in Bankview, Calgary
Chinook wind

Tabs lifting and breaking off

Once shingles lose their seal, Chinook gusts lift the tabs until they crack. This broken tab on a Bankview roof is typical of an older roof, and it usually shows up across more than one slope.

Rusted chimney flashing found during a roof inspection in Mayfair, Calgary
Flashing

Rusted chimney flashing

Chimneys are where most leaks start. The flashing on this Mayfair chimney had rusted through. On a replacement, every chimney, wall and skylight gets new metal.

Worn plumbing pipe flashing on a Kincora, Calgary roof during an inspection
Vents & pipes

Worn pipe flashings and vents

Rubber pipe boots dry out and crack in our sun and cold, like this one in Kincora. New pipe flashings and vents are part of every roof we install.

Rotting wood fascia behind the eavestrough on a Hidden Valley, Calgary home
Roof edges

Rotting fascia behind the eavestrough

When eavestroughs overflow, water soaks the wood behind them. This fascia in Hidden Valley was rotting behind the gutter, so the eaves, soffit and fascia were quoted with the roof.

Old cedar shakes torn off during a roof replacement in Marda Loop, Calgary
Cedar shake

Cedar shake past its life

Older inner-city homes often still have cedar shake. This Marda Loop roof came off down to the deck before the new roof system went on.

Hail is part of life in Calgary too, and we check for hail hits on every inspection. If hail is a concern for you, ask about Class 4 impact-rated shingles.

Calgary roofing questions

Have a question that isn’t here? Call us at (403) 333-0319.

It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers have to come off, how much decking needs replacing and whether you choose asphalt, impact-rated shingles or steel. We inspect the roof first and give you a written, itemized quote. Our Calgary roof cost guide explains what moves the price.

Ask each roofer for a written quote that lists the materials and scope, proof of WCB coverage and the labour warranty in writing. Ask who will inspect your roof and whether you will see photos. Every Bears Valley quote includes all of that.

Yes. Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. We install Malarkey’s rubberized Legacy line and can price it beside standard architectural shingles so you can compare.

For many homes, yes. Steel sheds snow, handles Chinook wind well and needs little upkeep. It costs more to install, so we quote metal and shingles side by side.

Most Calgary homes take a few days once work starts, depending on the size of the roof, the number of layers coming off and the weather.

Every roof we install has our 10-Year Labour Warranty in writing, and select shingles carry up to 50 years of manufacturer coverage. We also come back about a year later to check the roof after its first winter.

All of Calgary, from the inner southwest (Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Mayfair, Britannia) to the west hills (Aspen Woods, Signal Hill) and the north (Evanston, Panorama Hills, Sage Hill, Harvest Hills), plus nearby towns like Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks.
